The Story of the Calling

The Hand of VerseVisions

One artist. One calling.
Every painting born from a verse.

Mark Lawrence is an American painter and one of America's most widely collected Christian artists. Thousands of his prints have sold worldwide, and his work hangs in homes, offices, and hotels around the world. From his studio in Georgia, he has created more than 800 scripture-inspired works, the VerseVisions™ collection, each one born from a single Bible verse and painted as modern abstract art.

In His Own Words

Mark's story, exactly as he tells it.

I was a terrible student.

Spent most of my time watching the clock tick, praying the teacher wouldn't call on me. Every class felt like that- except art. I wasn't great at it, but I liked to try. My teachers saw something and encouraged me. So art became the one thing I did to try and be good at something.

Faith came later.

My family took us to church growing up, but Jesus wasn't real to me until I had nowhere else to turn.

I was married, one kid, another on the way, and my business failed. Bankrupt. Lost the house. Lost the car. If I was my wife, I would've left me too.

I said, "Lord Jesus, here I am. I've run my life my way for 30 years and I've got nothing to show for it. You said you take care of your sheep. If you'll have me, I want you to be my Lord."

I started reading the Bible every day. Still do.

He's carried me and my family through many more storms since, but He has never left me.

That's why I paint.

I read the Word every single day. The Spirit fills me up, and art is how I let the power and love of God out of me.

Jesus said if the people weren't praising Him, the very rocks would start shouting. He's God. If He's in you, you've got to tell people.

That's what I try to do with my art.

I still screw up and make mistakes. Sometimes some really bad ones, but He's always there with open arms waiting for me to come back into the fold. I can't imagine who I'd be without His love, grace and mercy.

Why abstract?

Because faith is experiential. You can't always put it into words. Sometimes you have to feel it. I want my art to be what prayer looks like- the golds of glory, the reds of redemption, the blues of peace.

People ask why I paint my limited editions with glue.

"I tell them, so Jesus will stick with me."

The Work

Every painting begins with a Bible verse. Mark reads, prays, and paints what the verse feels like. No two pieces share a verse treatment; each is an original interpretation, not decoration with a caption.

The Body of Work

Every painting Mark has created from God's Word carries a number. The numbering began in 2008, has never restarted, and never will. One artist, one calling, one continuous body of work.

When a hand-embellished canvas leaves the studio, its work is marked Collected in the registry. Until then, it is Seeking. And we say keeper, not buyer, on purpose. Works born from Scripture are not owned so much as kept, and one day passed on with their story.

Forty-six works already rest in private collections and churches. Each is numbered, signed, and certified, and its edition only shrinks. Once a work is fully collected, that door closes behind it for good.

This story is still being written. It began with a broken man saying "Here I am, Lord." It is growing toward something you will one day walk through in person: a place where this body of living Scripture hangs together, wall after wall. Every keeper helps build it.

For the Keepers

Placing a collector canvas is not completing a purchase. It is joining a story that is still being written.

Every keeper receives:

  • A personal letter from Mark with his reflections on your painting and the verse that inspired it
  • Your work's numbered Certificate of Authenticity, signed by Mark's hand
  • Your work's entry in the Body of Work registry
  • Membership in the Keeper's Circle: news from the studio and first look at new work

This is a personal art ministry, not a poster shop. Your keeping of one piece helps the next one be born: the next painting, the next verse study, the next verse made visible on someone's wall. And at the end of this road stands the dream, a place where people will walk through this same beauty in person. That is what your patronage builds.
